At their March 16 meeting the Board of Trustees of the Hauppauge Public Library agreed to lease for thirty years a portion of 1373-1 Veterans Memorial Highway for use as our Library. The space is 19,200 square feet and is expected to be occupied by the Library in Winter 2018. The building is owned by Matrix Equities, Inc. and is located at the corner of Veterans Highway and Spartan Lane.
“Since the failure of the June 2015 Hidden Pond Park bond vote, the Board of Trustees has spent almost two years looking for another place for the Library to function from,” said Stephen Bard, President of the Board of Trustees, “We are very excited by the location and the increased space for more and varied library services.” The Board of Trustees has been looking at properties to buy or lease, including vacant land and existing buildings. “We looked at buying an existing building but the cost did not make sense,” Mr. Bard shared, “the best option was a long term lease.”
The Board of Trustees did attempt to work with its current landlord, who did not move in a direction that was in line with the Library’s needs. The Board engaged Brad Bold from Real Estate Strategies to act as an exclusive broker during the search. His fees are compensated by Matrix Equities, not by the Library.
The future of Hidden Pond Park will now be examined. The Library remains the owner of the one-acre parcel. “Now that the Library’s future is set for the long term,” Bard said, “We can turn our attention to the fate of that land.”
